Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A secondary examinee, Sukanta Debnath, died on Saturday evening after suffering a severe head injury in a violent clash over a land dispute in Chalnipak, Alipurduar. The 16-year-old was among five people injured during the altercation on Friday night and had been in a coma for two days. He was initially admitted to Alipurduar District Hospital, where hospital superintendent Paritosh Mandal confirmed his condition was critical. Authorities advised transferring him to Kolkata, but he was later shifted to Cooch Behar Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to local sources, the dispute turned violent when Sajoy Debnath allegedly attacked his elder brother Arup Debnath's house with a sharp knife and sticks while under the influence of alcohol. His wife, Aarti Debnath, and two sons, Sukanta and Suman, were also present. A clash erupted between both sides, leaving five people injured. The extent of injuries sustained by the others involved has not been disclosed.
Police have been deployed in the area to prevent further tension, and an investigation into the incident is underway. Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and officials are gathering statements from those involved in the dispute. Residents have called for strict action against those responsible for the violence.
